Root canal treatment cleans out the pulp of an infected tooth to preserve its structure and prevent tooth loss. When the pulp deep inside your tooth becomes infected, it causes extreme pain. The pulp contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue that help your tooth to develop. 

If bacteria enters your tooth due to advanced decay, a crack, or an injury, the pulp may develop an infection. During a root canal treatment, your dentist cleans out the infection and replaces it with a biocompatible substance. A crown caps off the tooth to protect it for the long-term.

At your first visit, your dentist performs the root canal treatment. They use an anesthetic to numb the treatment area to ensure your comfort. Then, they use special dental instruments to create a small hole in your tooth and thoroughly remove the pulp and all signs of infection. 

The tooth is filled with a biocompatible dental cement that fills in the space. Next, the dentist takes an impression of your tooth and sends it to a lab to fabricate your custom crown. You’re fitted with a temporary crown in the meantime.

When your permanent crown comes in, you come back to the office to have it cemented.
